Antique watercolor painting by Paul E Harney. Signed and dated painting of a monks side profile wearing his brown habit by Paul Harney in 1903. Muted tones portray the rustic features of the monk with receding hairline and red cheeks suggestive of a hard yet healthy and cheerful life in the subjects face.

Paul E. Harney was born in New Orleans in 1850. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City, and also abroad at the Royal Academy in Munich. Harney eventually moved to and settled in Alton, Illinois where he taught art classes and worked at Shurtleff College as a professor.

Harney was well known and respected in the Saint Louis artist community. He occupied a chair in the Saint Louis School of Fine Art (later Washington University's Fine Art Department) and was additionally a member of the Society of Western Artists and a founding member of the Saint Louis Artist Guild.
