Antique religious silver WCTU matrons medal. This antique silver matrons medal was presented to a candidate for orally reciting bible verse or other Christian verse. The Matrons medal was one of the most coveted oratorical awards given out by the WCTU. By promoting oral, musical, written and general educational events this encouraged not only education among the young but a deterrent towards alcohol as a recreational pastime. This dates to the late 19th century or early 20th century.
