1902 Copper Coin Medallion East Ham School Medal

  • $ 6500

Antique British copper medallion issued by the East Ham school board. This medal was awarded to R Clubb for perfect attendance at school in 1902. These medals were meant to encourage children to attend and become educated instead of being institutionalized into the workplace at a young age. Education programs had been established in the 1860's/70's with the plight of the poor and industrialization of child labor which led to the education act of 1870 which made it compulsory for employers to provide children with 10 hours of education weekly. The establishment of the NSPCC in 1889 further compounded the need for an education over work for children under 13.

Marked on front: Eastham School Board, presented to R Clubb for perfect attendance 1902.

A great addition to your exonumia medallion or British educational collection.
