Antique Royal Navy Society Pinback Medal

Antique silver mounted Royal Navy Temperance movement society (non silver) pinback religious medal. HMS Reindeer was a Royal Navy wooden-hulled screw-driven sloop of the Camelion (engine and sails) class, in service from 1866 to 1876. In 1868 she claimed Caroline Island for the British Crown. Medal commemorating the founding of the 'Reindeer' Temperance Society. Obverse: Starboard broadside view of full-rigged ship under sail. Legend 'ROYAL NAVAL TEMPERANCE SOCIETY'.

Reverse: Within an olive wreath the inscription, 'INSTITUTED ON BOARD H.M.S. REINDEER JULY 1868'. Members of temperance societies agreed to abstain from alcohol during the antique alcohol temperance movement. The original 'Reindeer' Temperance Society was expanded to a Royal Naval Temperance Society, covering the whole of the service, in 1871.

The mount is silver but the medal itself is not. Marked D&Co on the mount.

Pinback medal measures 1.3“ diameter and weighs 0.6oz

CONDITION

This religious medal is in good condition but the pin is missing from the back (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
