Victorian Silver Soccer Medal for Bells Temperance - 1886

  • $ 95000

Temperance Movement gold and sterling silver runners up medal. Awarded to A Warburton of the team Bells Temperance in 1886 it is beautifully inscribed on the back of the sterling silver medal. It has a gold insert slug in the front center illustrating a football player. I believe this belonged to Albert Warburton who was the captain of the Blackburn Olympic team which defeated Old Etonians in the 1883 FA Cup Final played at Kennington Oval on 31 March 1883. These charity cups were played among many non league associations in the late 19th century.

Marked: Accrington and District Charity Cup. Bells Temperance, Runners Up, A Warburton, 1886. Sterling Silver.

The gold piece on the front tests for 10K gold.

Bells temperance was a working mans club in Nuttall St in Accrington.

The first Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy took place in the 1885–86 season, when Bells Temperance were the winners. The also won the 1886-87 season.

This is a great piece of historical memorabilia for football fans.
