Japanese Shakudo Meiji Era Letter Opener Page Turner

  • $ 22000

Vintage Japanese Shakudo letter opener made from metal. Late Meiji period in date (1868 -1912) this beautifully ornate letter opener was crafted with great skill and detail. The handle is ornately decorated with an owl (Fukuro) in a tree on one side and a vase of flowers on the other. Both sides are highlighted in copper on one of the birds, flowers and tree trunk. The blade depicts the fable of the monkey and the crab on both sides.

Fukuro Owls were originally a sign of luck and protection from suffering within Japanese and Shinto culture. However since the Meiji period they have represented knowledge and education which is relevant for a letter opener/ page turner. This would make a fabulous birthday gift, housewarming gift holiday gift or for any Japanese metal enthusiasts.
