Antique 1893 Oil on Panel by Paul Léon Jazet (French, 1848–1918)
Antique framed art by noted French Victorian artist Paul Leon Jazet (1848-1918). Original oil painting on wood panel of a military dragoon officer courting a maiden collecting apples. Signed and dated on the lower right hand corner by Jazet in 1893 this fleeting romantic opportunity encapsulates a French officer in full mounted regalia casually smoking a cigarette whilst attempting to impress the young lady crossing the bridge. In the background, his colleague is holding his horse as he embarks on his romantic endeavor to some degree of success if her facial expressions are to read correctly. The attention to detail is painstakingly striking, from the subtle whisp of smoke smoldering from his cigar to the highly reflective shine on his cuirass.
Paul Leon Jazet is renowned for his military encounter paintings usually between a soldier and a woman, although his most famous painting is of the death of Horatio Nelson.
