Antique British Leather Steamer Trunk by Frederick Gorringe

  • $ 42500

DESCRIPTION

Vintage featherweight flextime and leather travel steamer trunk allegedly belonging to Lord Aster (which most likely refers to Lord Astor). The name Crawley on the top of the trunk I believe refers to the town in Sussex, England just south of London where the trunk resided in the local peerage seat property. There are several remnants of the luggage travel labels on this steamer trunk from previous journeys.

This functional piece of luggage is in exceptional condition for its age as it dates to around 1920 and it has the aesthetic quality rarely seen in modern piece. This would make a great linen trunk, coffee table or as a functional antique trunk.

On metal clase: Warranted Flaxite Fibre (FEATHERWEIGHT) Reg. Trademark
Label inside: Frederick Gorringe Ltd, Buckingham Palace Road
Trunks Suitcases, Bags and holdalls etc

I recently acquired this piece of luggage from an antiques store in London. Frederick Gorringe was a silk mercer and draper who founded Gorringe's department store.

Gorringes remained a well-known, fashionable department store until its closure in 1968.
