Victorian British Silver Match Holder & Striker
Late Victorian sterling silver mounted clear ribbed glass match holder and match striker. Silver hallmarks for 1895 (v), sterling silver (lion passant) & Birmingham (anchor) the makers mark (CM) is Charles May. Found in smoking rooms and high class establishments for the use of patrons which could at that time only be men. Matches were open stored in the center and struck along the ridged glass edge when needed. These are an elegant yet pompous reminder of Victorian opulence. This would suit any living room or smoking parlor now or be used on a dining room table as a toothpick holder when entertaining.
Match holder measures 2“ tall by 2.5“ wide and weighs 7oz.
This match striker & holder is in good condition with dents to the silver, flea bites from the glass and some scratches underneath (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
