Antique 1890s Hayne Suspended Inkwell Desk

  • $ 14000

Antique Victorian desktop inkwell. Dating to the late 1890's this suspended inkwell was invented by Hayne in the late Victorian period in New York. This revolutionary inkwell had so many advantages over competitors, namely that it occupied unused space on a roll top desk as it was clipped to the inside which was a more natural position to use. The flint glass reservoirs held a significantly larger amount of two different colored inks and the ink never dried out due to the shape of the bottles and the inkwell tube. Originally this also held a square glass bottle with a sponge in the middle which is no longer present. The company was bought out in 1909 by Edward Kimptons firm.
