Antique 19th C Framed Portrait Miniature Oil Painting

  • $ 26000

Antique 19th C framed portrait. Hand painted over a large tin type this type of medium was popular in the late 1850's early 1860's. Usually the studio photographer was also the artist or the artist worked for the studio hand coloring or overpainting the subject. Sometimes referred to as ghost painting due to the main image already being put to the medium, as in this case metal.

I have no information on the gentleman in the portrait other than the obvious, that he was a man of some means as intimated both by his clothing and the fact that he could afford such a luxury as a paint over tin type portrait. I apologize for any reflections on the images from the glass.

A great addition to your Victorian decor home or the perfect gift for a miniature painting collector.
