Antique 19th C German Villeroy & Boch Walking Stein

  • $ 28000

Antique German Villeroy and Boch style 19th C decorative walking server stein. Beautiful figural pottery slip ware server with applied pagan and woodland characters throughout. The main figure depicts Gambrinus the King holding up a pokal away from a bothersome child. Also depicted is the King of Beers holding open a tap which is filling up a couple of walking steins underneath, hence the term for this type of pottery walking stein pots or servers. Typical of both German folklore imagery and the style of pottery being produced in the late 19th century this piece is crammed with hunting and harvest symbols which when healthy and bountiful were always celebrated with copious amounts of beer. Although this piece is unmarked it is almost certainly produced in Germany by Villeroy and Boch.

A fabulous addition to your eclectic home decor or rare German pottery collection
