Antique American Sword War of 1812 - William Rose Philadelphia

  • $ 1,15000

Antique American sword made by William Rose of Philadelphia. Manufactured around the turn of the 18th/19th century this antique sword is typical in style for the War of 1812. Marked on the ricasso with the name Rose this double edged sword appears to be more of an officers dress sword rather than a field sword.

The D shaped hilt appears to be made from a light and flexible metal brass with remnants of its original japanning which further enhances the probability of it being a dress sword. The only decorative scrolling to be found on this antique sword is on the pommel which is very French in design.

Marked "Rose" on the ricasso.

I believe this to be the work of William Rose made perhaps for a low ranking officer or NCO of the artillery (hence the brass hilt). The ribbed handle appears to be made from marine bone or bovine bone which was ties in with the period. I also believe that this was an early officers sword made around the 1790's or very early 1800's due to the lack of " & son" or "& sons" being stamped on the ricasso.

A great addition to your militaria collection or man cave decor.
