Antique Signed Seascape Oil Painting ~ Andreas Dirks

  • $ 15000

Oil on wood panel by German artist Andreas Dirks (1866-1922). This small rural seascene depicts a small sailboat on the estuary in the foreground with a cathedral through the forest in the background. Painted in the plein air style that was popular at the time the brush strokes are rugged yet full of definition distinguishing great depth in such a small image. The back of the wood panel is stamped "painted in Holland". More commonly associated as a painter of seascapes and is most often associated with the German city of Dusseldorf this is a competent and rustic painting.

Andreas Dirks studied in Dusseldorf and Weimer and was the student of Theodor Hagen, who was also from Dusseldorf and taught at Weimer. Hagen was a founder of German Impressionism and is also known for his paintings of Hamburg harbor (but he was mainly a landscape painter).

Signed bottom right: Dirks
Provenance: Private Art Collection Estate Los Angeles

These would make a great addition to your cottage chic home decor or as a great addition to any art collection.
