Antique spelter bust of Sheherezade after French sculpture Emmanuel Villanis. Bronzed overlay on shelter still retains its original monochromatic colors. Marked under the bust is the name of the piece Mille et Une Nuits ( A Thousand and One Nights)and signed E Villanis on the right shoulder, this shelter bust is not an original bronze produced by Emmanuel Villanis. Produced around 1900 this antique spelter bust is in beautiful condition and missing her plume of feathers only.

Typical of the romantic resurgence of classic cultures and mythology that swept Europe in the late 19th and early 20th century these subjects were widely painted and sculpted. Sheherezade was the teller of the Arabian nights stories to her husband, the king Shahryar. She told half a story each nigh for 1001 nights in order to stay alive and until her husband fell in love with her after which he made her his queen.

MEASUREMENTS

Spelter sculpture measures 15.5" tall 5.5" deep by 10" wide and weighs 9lb 5oz.

CONDITION

In good condition with signs of use commensurate with age. Originally there would have been a plume of feathers protruding from her turban but these are now sadly missing (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
