Victorian British Silver Vaseline Glass Match Holder

DESCRIPTION

Late Victorian mounted green ribbed vaseline glass match holder and match striker with silver hallmarks on rim. Made in 1899 (z) out of sterling silver (lion passant) in Birmingham (anchor) the makers mark is indistinct.

Found in smoking rooms and high class establishments for the use of patrons which could at that time only be men. Matches were open stored in the center and struck along the ridged glass edge when needed. These are an elegant yet pompous reminder of Victorian opulence. This match striker & match holder would suit any living room or smoking parlor now or be used on a dining room table as a toothpick holder when entertaining.

MEASUREMENTS

Match holder measures 2“ tall by 2.75“ wide and weighs 13oz.

CONDITION

In good condition with dents to the silver, flea bites on the vaseline glass and some scratches on the underside (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
