Victorian British Mappin & Webb Silver Match Holder

  • $ 22500

Antique British sterling silver mounted clear ribbed glass match holder and match striker. Silver hallmarks for sterling silver (lion passant), city assay of London (leopards head), the makers mark (Mn & Wb) Mappin & Webb and a letter mark which has unfortunately been rubbed beyond distinction. This dates to the first quarter of the 20th century.

Found in smoking rooms and high class establishments for the use of patrons which could at that time only be men. Matches were open stored in the center and struck along the ridged glass edge when needed.

These are an elegant yet pompous reminder of Victorian opulence. This would suit any living room or smoking parlor now or be used on a dining room table as a toothpick holder when entertaining.

MEASUREMENTS

Match holder measures 2“ tall by 2.5“ wide and weighs 1lb 1oz.
