Victorian British Sterling Silver Glass Match Strike Holder Barrett & Sons 1892

  • $ 32500

DESCRIPTION

Antique British sterling silver mounted clear smooth glass match holder and match striker. Silver hallmarks for sterling silver (lion passant), city assay of Chester (leopards head), the makers mark (CS & FS) Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings (Frank) Shepherd and a letter mark of I (1892). Although this piece was made in Chester it was distributed through a London retailer A Barrett & Sons of Piccadilly.

Found in smoking rooms and high class establishments for the use of patrons which could at that time only be men. Matches were open stored in the center and struck along the ridged glass edge when needed.

These are an elegant yet pompous reminder of Victorian opulence. This would suit any living room or smoking parlor now or be used on a dining room table as a toothpick holder when entertaining.
