Vintage Japanese Shakudo Meiji Era Letter Opener

Vintage Japanese Shakudo letter opener made from brass. Late Meiji period in date (1868 -1912) this beautifully ornate letter opener was crafted with great skill and detail. The handle is ornately decorated with a pheasant among a floral canopy on each side. One side is plated with copper on some of the foliage. The blade depicts heavy foliage with a dragonfly on one side and sparse leaves on the other.

Pheasants were a sign of nationalism within Japanese and Shinto culture. This would make a fabulous birthday gift, housewarming gift holiday gift or for any Japanese metal enthusiasts.

MEASUREMENTS

Opener measures: 12" long by 1 wide and weighs 2.4oz.

CONDITION

In generally good condition considering age and use. There is a small split where the blade enters the handle and at the bottom - please see all pictures as they form part of the description.
