Antique pair of leather tomes of the Evangelical saints. Stunning gilt-tooled red moroccan covers with gold lettering on spines. Raised bands on the spine with marble faced coverings on the front and back bindings. Engraved frontispiece in each volume with title pages in red and black lettering, decorative headers, tailpieces and initials and all text within double red ruled box. Beautiful edition of the four gospels contains 128 fine engravings by Alexandre Bida (one of the most celebrated French painters of the Romantic period), 28 originals by Bida, and 100 after illustrations by other renowned artists of the time, such as Henriette Browne, Bodmer, Bracquemond, Chaplin, Deblois, Flameng, L. Gaucherel, Gilbert and others.

Each book measures 22.5" tall by 16" wide by 2.5" deep and weigh 27lb 15oz each.
CONDITION
In good solid condition and ready to display with wear commensurate with age. There are a couple of scuffs to the marbling throughout (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
