Antique 1920 English Sterling Silver 3" Match Holder Striker Royal Doulton 5437
DESCRIPTION
Stunning Royal Doulton ceramic match holder and match striker with silver hallmarks on rim. Made in 1920 (v) out of sterling silver (lion passant) in Birmingham (anchor) the makers mark is John Goffe & son (JG&S). Found in smoking rooms and high class establishments for the use of patrons which could at that time only be men. Matches were open stored in the center and struck along the textured body when needed. These are an elegant yet pompous reminder of Victorian and Edwardian opulence. This match striker & match holder would suit any living room or smoking parlor now or be used on a dining room table as a toothpick holder when entertaining.
