Antique 19th C British Victorian Water Closet Toilet

  • $ 87500

Antique early Victorian British campaign portable toilet. Known as a Thunderbox this early Victorian commode is one of the first ever flushable toilets. It is a portable toilet made fro use on campaign by a military commissioned officer as only they could have afforded this at the time. The wooden casing appears to be made from maple and mahogany, the internal liner is made from tin and the bowl is enamel on metal. The bowl is removable as is the metal bucket inside. Originally designed and patented in 1831 as a portable self acting water closet this is a great rare example of pre Victorian innovative design.

Signed on the porcelain: R Wiss Patentee 38 Charing Cross London

This would make a great addition to any curio or Victorian home decor collection. This would make a great early holiday gift.
