DESCRIPTION

Antique British gold and white anti alcohol temperance movement ceremonial sash designed by renowned regalia maker G Tutill of London. Beautiful silk illustration portraying the reward of temperance is peace and plenty. Tutill's silk banners were dyed, woven and hand painted at the company premises at 83 City Road in London. The City Road site was designed specifically for banner-making with three galleries and a glass roof to let in daylight. The painting process was highly skilled with different artists each painting landscapes, emblems, portraits and technical scenes such as buildings or workplaces. Banners made for the Ancient Order of Foresters and other friendly societies featured similar symbols representing hope, justice and the 'all seeing eye' which were common in other artworks produced by the labour movement. This piece dates between 1861 and 1887 when George Tutill died.

CONDITION

This anti alcohol sash is in good condition with some discoloration commensurate with age and use (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
