Vintage Japanese Shakudo Meiji Era Letter Opener

  • $ 19000

Vintage Japanese Shakudo letter opener made from plated copper. Late Meiji period in date (1868 -1912) this beautifully ornate letter opener was crafted with great skill and detail. The handle is ornately decorated with a series of frogs in various poses of dance on one side with a vase of chrysanthemums and scissors on the other. The blade depicts sparse floral scenes on both sides.

Frogs were a sign of good luck (and signifies a return) within Japanese culture so this highlights the significance of these symbols being used to open letters that good luck was in the returning letter . This would make a fabulous birthday gift, housewarming gift holiday gift or for any Japanese metal enthusiasts.
