Antique Dresden Hand Painted Meissen Porcelain Portrait Box ~ Richard Klemm

  • $ 46000

Antique Dresden ware painted porcelain portrait box. Exquisitely painted and signed by noted miniature artist Richard Klemm. One of the 4 original decorators that registered the blue crown Dresden mark this piece is decorated on the body of a green and white background with raised gold floral decor. The lid is similarly decorated except for the exquisite miniature painting of a lady in the center wearing a crown and shawl.

The term “Dresden porcelain” refers more to an artistic movement than a particular line of figurines or dinnerware. Several decorating studios emerged in this Saxony capital in response to the rise of “Romanticism” during the 19th century. Dresden was an important centre of this artistic, cultural and intellectual movement, which attracted painters, sculptors, poets, philosophers and porcelain decorators alike.

In 1883, in response to the exciting developments happening all around them, four prominent ceramic decorators (Richard Klemm, Donath & Co., Oswald Lorenz, and Adolph Hamann) registered the famous blue crown Dresden mark, and the widely popular “Dresden style” was born. The style they employed was a mixture of Meissen and Vienna flower and figure painting.
