1850s Antique Staffordshire Ceramic Bacchus Head Wedding Jug

  • $ 70000

Rare Staffordshire pottery wine wedding jug. Molded in the form of Bacchus with alarming detail this smiling heathen figure was revered as green man throughout 18th and 19th century. His hair is adorned as foliage in form and color to further his affiliation with the old gods. His lock of hair also serves as a handle for ease of holding. It has the benefit of having a small spout as one of his hair locks in the front of his head for the more genteel pouring and a glut spout on the side for the passing around in male company. These are sometimes referred to as wedding jugs, but I have never come across one of such quality. This most likely dates to the early 19th century if judging by the features modeled on his face.

These would make a great birthday for any ceramic antiques expert or as an amazing addition to any Staffordshire or barware collection.

Jug measure 11.75" tall by 9.5" wide by 9.5" deep and weighs 8lb 8oz.

In good condition considering age and use. There are some call chips to the edges on this piece but nothing that would in anyway impact the beauty and uniqueness of it (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
