DESCRIPTION

Antique Victorian ecclesiastical heavy brass tray. Antique apostle finger or pen tray by William Tonks & sons is superbly cast with decorative mythical creatures and scroll work and marked with the name of each of the gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke & John along each side in latin. This would make a great pin, change or key tray for any style property, this antique tray dates to 1884 according to the registration number.

William Tonks and sons (founded in 1789 or 1794) were manufacturers of architectural hardware, art metalware, campaign metalware, ecclesiastical metalwork and an early fabricator of decorative patterned tubes. They won gold medals at the 1851 and 1862 Exhibitions in London and in 1855 at Paris. By 1869 they had developed the eight-pointed 'sun' trade mark showing two eyes and a mouth. Later the 'WT&S' initials were sometimes inserted instead for the marks on some items.
