DESCRIPTION

Antique 17th 18th century silver tabernacle key. Large unmarked but tests for sterling key which was used for opening a tabernacle on an alter in a church during the colonial period. Sterling moulded over a metal bar for strength ( can be heard when shaken). This was both a functional and symbolic key meant to illustrate the importance of the bearer both physically and spiritually in situ during the late 17th early 18th century in the ever changing environment of the colonial period.

A rare example of colonial religious silver curio which is unusual to have survived.

This antique item would make a great addition to any collection or strange and curious relics.

MEASUREMENTS

Sterling key measures 7" long by 2" wide by 0.5" deep and weighs 4oz.

CONDITION

In good condition with no cracks or breaks (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
