Victorian British Sterling Silver Glass Match Strike Holder Barrett & Sons 1892
Antique British sterling silver mounted clear smooth glass match holder and match striker. Silver hallmarks for sterling silver (lion passant), city assay of Chester (leopards head), the makers mark (CS & FS) Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings (Frank) Shepherd and a letter mark of I (1892). Found in smoking rooms and high class establishments for the use of patrons which could at that time only be men. Matches were open stored in the center and struck along the ridged glass edge when needed.
These are an elegant yet pompous reminder of Victorian opulence. This would suit any living room or smoking parlor now or be used on a dining room table as a toothpick holder when entertaining.
Match holder measures 3“ tall by 3.6“ wide and weighs 2lb 2oz.
This match striker & holder is in good condition with some small dents to the silver, some small flea bites to the glass and some small scratches underneath (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
