Vintage Axel Linus ( 1885 - 1980 ) large oil on canvas painting. Painted in 1944 this signed and dated large oil canvas work depicts a lady washing. This bathing beauty has all the form and figure of a healthy female who seems blissfully unaware or not interested in the observer. The natural light pouring in from the left further heightens her almost sensual appeal leading depth to the canvas. This study of a female bather is tastefully and expertly executed by an old school artist which would grace any walls in a library, living room or boudoir.

About Axel Linus

Born in Orebro, Sweden on Nov. 27, 1885, Linus studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm (1905-10) and at Academies Colarossi and Moderne in Paris (1911-12).

Upon immigrating to Chicago in 1920, he worked as a muralist, portraitst, and commericial artist. Important portrait commissions included Charles Lindberg and Carl Sandburg. In the mid-1930s he married and set out across the Southwest camping and painting landscapes of the Southern California deserts. In 1940 he settled in Palm Springs, CA where he purchased a hotel and set up a studio in the scenic Snow Creek Canyon at the foot of Mt San Jacinto. Linus died there on April 2, 1980.

CONDITION

In generally good condition with some small signs of use commensurate with age. There is some craquelure throughout and some small areas of paint loss throughout the painting mainly on the foliage - please see all pictures as they form part of the description.
