Vintage Signed Art Print of Paul Robeson ~ By Edward Biberman

  • $ 84500

Vintage 1940's etching of Paul Robeson (1898-1976) as Othello by Edward Biberman (1904-1986). Paul Leroy Robeson was an American bass baritone concert artist and stage and film actor who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political activism. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Edward Biberman was an American artist active in the mid-twentieth century. His work ranged from stylised portraits to history-inspired murals, and drew on the emerging urban landscapes of southern California, and on current events such as the Great Depression, the Second World War, and labour unrest. He often painted the figure as a way of addressing issues of race, immigration, labor, and ensuing social inequality around the world. His painting of The Biafran Child has become a symbol for the future of our children lest we mend our ways and was under consideration for a commemorative stamp for the benefit of the homeless children of Haiti.

This portrait of Paul Robeson was most likely done when Robeson reprised his role of Othello at the Shubert Theatre in 1943 and became the first African American to play the role with a white supporting cast on Broadway.

This would make a great addition to any Shakespeare or stage actor collection.
