19th C Hans Von Glumer German Bronze Dionysus Sculpture W & P Gladenbeck Mounted
DESCRIPTION
Antique bronze sculpture of Dionysus (Bacchus in Roman mythology). Cast in the Greek style of a young male clad in an animal skin making an offering. In his right hand he holds a wine ewer and in his left hand he offers up a cup of the said liquid as if in a toast to a higher being. The terrain on which he stands is a mountainous outcrop. Finely cast features suggest a young man who has come of age as if he has just had his first trial as a warrior and been successful, hence the toast and the attire. Sculpted by the German Hans Weddo von Glumer (1867-1915) this piece was cast in the W & P Gladenbeck foundry in Germany and dates to the late 19th C. It sits proudly on a rouge marble pedestal.
