DESCRIPTION

Antique bronze sculpture titled "A young girl" by French sculptor Jean Escoula (1851-1911). Depicting the bust of a young lady looking tenderly up at the viewer this bronze sculpture evokes sadness in her forlorn look as she contemplates her future. Her simple clothing, silk necklace with a simple pendant and unadorned hair suggest she is certainly not wealthy. The hollow bronze artwork which sits on a marble plinth is signed on the back with the artists signature and the number 98 on the opposite side which is either the date or the piece number.

Jean Escoula received apprenticeship training with his father marble worker until 1871. He worked as a practitioner in the workshops of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux , Jean Gautherin , Alfred Lenoir and Auguste Rodin , while at the same time developing his personal work.

Between 1884 and 1900, he executed for Rodin the marbles of Eve , Eternal Idol , Madame Alfred Roll (around 1887, with Louis Cornu), Madame Vicuna (in 1888, with Louis Cornu), La Danaïde (around 1889), as well as the horses of the Monument of Claude Gellée (in 1892, with Victor Peter ) [ 2 ] .

Between 1868 and 1908, he exhibited at the Salon of French artists , and from 1892 to 1910 at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts .

He won a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and at that of 1900 .

This would make a great birthday gift or as a great addition to any bronze sculpture, French or classical collection.

MEASUREMENTS

Sculpture on the plinth measures 11" long by 5.5" wide by 11" tall and weighs 14lb 8oz.
